I wanted to share some of the work in progress on this Oil Painting I completed not too long ago, entitled “The Last Frontier”.
It is a strange painting for me and with a strange technique to me that I have tried for the first time, but one that I felt was need to be used on this piece. Basically, it was all painted with a palette knife for the most part which helped get that grungy feeling and texture. And give the painting a bit of thickness. Some later paint was added using brushes to get smoother effect; like the bed area for example and some of the detail on the figures.
To start, I did a small quick study. All I knew, was that I wanted red for the heart, green and grey for the walls and a sickly bright yellow for the light outside.
I then proceeded to make some of the perspective drawing and overall linework, using one-point perspective in that case. I feel sometimes even perspective can give to the overall feeling and intensity of a painting. The one-point perspective, being the most simple and focused; felt like it always succeeds in making a painting more focused into a single point. Something a bit like that famous painting by Munch , “The Scream”.
The rest was just laying down the paint, until getting the final result..
